How to Get More Google Reviews
Google reviews are the first thing people check before they trust you. Before calling a contractor, booking a table or picking an auto shop, they look at the star rating and the number of reviews. For a local business, collecting reviews on a regular basis is no longer optional. It decides who clicks on your listing instead of the one right below it.
Here is what actually works, and what to stay away from.
1. Ask at the right moment
The most common mistake is waiting too long. A customer is most willing to leave a review right after a job well done, while they are still happy about it. A few hours later, that momentum is gone.
Send the request the same day, ideally within minutes or hours of finishing the job.
2. Send a direct link to your listing
No customer is going to look your business up on Google just to rate you. The shorter the path, the more reviews you get. A direct link to the review box removes every step in between: one click, one rating, done.
You will find that link in your Google Business Profile, under "Ask for reviews" (Google also calls it the review form).
3. Text instead of emailing
Text messages get opened within minutes, with a read rate close to 95%. Email gets buried in an inbox that is already full. For a review request, texting converts much better, and you already have the cell number of most of your customers.
4. Make the message personal
A message that comes from your business name and uses the customer's first name lands better than an anonymous blast. Keep it short and polite, and do not push. You are asking for a small favor, not begging for one.
5. Follow up once, and only once
Plenty of customers mean to leave a review, then forget. One single follow-up a few days later brings back a good share of those lost reviews. Past that, you start to annoy people. One reminder is enough.
6. Ask every customer, not just the happy ones
This one matters: Google prohibits review gating, which means only asking for reviews from customers you know are satisfied. Everyone has to get the same link. Beyond the rule itself, it is also healthier for your business. A steady stream of genuine reviews builds more trust than a rating that looks too perfect to be real.
7. Automate the collection
Doing all of this by hand, job after job, never holds up over time. That is exactly what a tool like Avilio is for: you enter the customer's cell number, the text goes out automatically with the direct link, the follow-up fires on its own, and you can track the results (sent, clicked, reviews received).
In short
To get more Google reviews: ask early, with a direct link, by text, to every customer, with one follow-up, and automate the whole thing so it keeps running. That is exactly what Avilio was built to do.
